New Zealand: Work and travel Auckland

Arrive Auckland

Welcome to Auckland International Airport, where our local team eagerly awaits to greet you and whisk you away to your arrival accommodation. No stress or hassle – it’s easy peasy, as we take you straight to the front door, ensuring a seamless transition after your long flight. Take this time to unwind, recover from your journey, and mingle with fellow travelers at the hostel bar.

If you’ve arrived a few days ahead of the U.Team’s scheduled activities, fret not! We’ve got you covered with a plethora of awesome activities and day trips that you can pre-book. How about an exhilarating bungee jump off the iconic Auckland Harbour Bridge? Or perhaps you’d prefer to explore the untamed beauty of the Wild West Coast? The U.Team is here to assist you, so feel free to discuss your preferences and interests before you travel. Let’s make your time in Auckland an unforgettable experience filled with thrilling adventures and fantastic memories!

Meet the local team

Today’s main focus is to ensure you’re fully set up and acquainted with Auckland. We’ll kick off with a thorough briefing, ensuring all your essential documents, like passport, IDs, and CVs, are in order. Once the basics are covered, we’ll embark on an exciting walking tour of the city, led by our knowledgeable local team. They’ll introduce you to the finest coffee spots, amazing eateries, must-visit bars (and those you might want to avoid), and all the top attractions. This way, you can start living like a local right from the start of your adventure.

During the walking tour, we’ll make a stop at the bank to assist you in setting up your New Zealand bank account. Additionally, we’ll provide you with a local SIM card and guide you through the process of obtaining your IRD tax number.

In the afternoon, you’ll have the freedom to explore more of Auckland at your own pace, alongside your group. This time is perfect for scouting potential places to live or simply immersing yourself in the vibrant cityscape. Our ultimate goal is to ensure you’re well-prepared and feel at ease navigating Auckland, as if it were your home away from home. So, let the exciting adventure begin!

How to live and travel like a local

Today is dedicated to equipping you with all the essential information for working and traveling around New Zealand. We’ll kick things off with a comprehensive job workshop where you’ll receive assistance in preparing your resumé to impress Kiwi employers. We’ll also provide insights into the types of work available and guide you in searching for the perfect job, unless you prefer to explore and travel around the country first.

After a day of learning and organizing, we’ll head out as a group to take a ferry to Devonport, a picturesque harbor-side village on the northern shores of Auckland. Here, we’ll gather at a local restaurant for a delightful meal, enjoying each other’s company and the charming ambiance of this beautiful spot. It’s the perfect opportunity to unwind and bond with your fellow travelers before the real adventures begin.

Finalise plans

After your night out last night, we’ll start the day with a leisurely morning. We highly recommend trying out the delicious breakfast and coffee options at Commercial Bay. If you haven’t already, take a stroll down to Wynyard Quarter or the Viaduct for some delightful sights.

In the afternoon, we’ll provide you with more essential information to finalize your preparations for working and traveling in New Zealand. You’ll have a drop-in session with the Work New Zealand team, who will be available throughout your entire stay to offer any additional assistance or guidance you may need.

Tomorrow, get ready for your first taste of New Zealand beyond the bustling Auckland metropolis, as we venture out to explore the wonders of this incredible country.

Bay of Islands

The Bay of Islands are just that, a huge harbour of 144 islands, in what is affectionately known as the winterless north. Today you leave the hustle and bustle of Auckland city behind for a few days exploring Northland and up close to the real New Zealand. You will travel north with your group by bus. But before, we reach the amazing Bay of Island late morning we will stop for a short hike into the magnificent Whangarei Falls.

The plan is to arrive in the bay of the Island just at lunch time. Tonight you will stay in the seaside town of Paihia, which includes New Zealand’s most historic location Waitangi – the place where the British colonists and the native New Zealand Maori signed the Treaty of Waitangi to formalise the creation of the country. Northland is rich in history and Māori culture.

Explore the Bay of Islands

Today, you have the entire day to immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of the Bay of Islands and its crystal-clear waters. This stunning destination offers a plethora of water and land-based adventure activities for you to choose from. You can try your hand at fishing, enjoy a sailing excursion, embark on a sea kayaking adventure, or simply unwind on one of the pristine beaches in the area.

For nature enthusiasts, there are captivating bush walks to explore, including a visit to the mesmerizing Haruru Falls. Don’t miss the chance to visit a charming local pub or take a trip to Waitangi, a historically significant site where New Zealand’s founding documents were agreed upon in 1840.

If you’re interested in pre-booking some epic water activities, feel free to talk to our U.Team, who will be more than happy to assist you. And for a local tip, head down to the pier and ask one of the local kids to show you how to throw a “manu bomb,” a fun and exciting splash into the water! Enjoy your fantastic day of exploration and adventure in the Bay of Islands.

Keri Keri

By now, you must be truly embracing the slower-paced and relaxed lifestyle of New Zealand. Today, before we head back to Auckland, we’ll venture a little further north to the charming town of Keri Keri. With its abundance of annual sunshine hours, Keri Keri is Northland’s largest town and offers a delightful place to live. The region also provides plenty of job opportunities on farms and orchards.

In the morning, we’ll enjoy a scenic hike and visit some of the stunning waterfalls in the area. Afterward, we’ll make a stop at the renowned “Old Packhouse” Farmer’s Market for lunch, famous for its fresh produce and amazing coffee.

Upon returning to Auckland, the van will drop you off at the hostel. Please note that accommodation for the night is not included, so if you wish to stay here, ensure you have pre-purchased the extra nights. After these incredible 7 days, you should be well-prepared to hit the ground running and start working. However, for those lucky ones who wish to further explore and get to know the country, there’s always the option of joining our 24-day New Zealand U.Trip first, providing you with a deeper understanding of the country and helping you find the best place to live and work. The choice is yours, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.

Commence your New Zealand adventure in the awe-inspiring harbour city, Auckland, with our U. 7-day Auckland working holiday program.
