New Zealand 24-day adventure tour

Kia Ora Aotearoa

Join us today at 4pm at the hostel to meet your U.Guide and fellow travelers. Get introduced to the tour and enjoy a welcome drink. Bring your questions and smiles! Afterward, we’ll head out for a group meal to foster camaraderie and get to know each other better.

Auckland to Rangitoto Island

Embark on your New Zealand adventure today as we venture off the beaten path, starting with a climb up Auckland’s youngest volcano. Auckland, situated on 44 volcanic cones, is guarded by the majestic Rangitoto Island in the Waitemata Harbour.

The Waitemata Harbour is renowned for its breathtaking beauty, with its sheltered islands serving as a playground for boat enthusiasts. Auckland is fondly known as the City of Sails due to the abundance of boats dotting the harbor, especially on summer weekends.

Hop on a delightful ferry ride across the harbor, offering a unique perspective of Auckland that sets you apart from most visitors. Enjoy a leisurely walk to the volcano’s summit, exploring saltwater pools, volcanic caves, black lava and scoria fields, and one of New Zealand’s largest Pohutukawa forests. Witness the stunning panoramic views, encompassing the Auckland city skyline, the vastness of the Hauraki Gulf, and the surrounding islands.

(Breakfast included)

Auckland to Hahei

Welcome to the start of our unforgettable journey! Today, bid farewell to Auckland and say a warm “kia ora!” as we embark on a trip of a lifetime. Our route takes us southeast, traversing the picturesque Bombay Hills and rolling hills of lush farmland, until we reach the charming coastal town of Hahei Beach on the Coromandel Peninsula.

Hahei Beach awaits with its enchanting caves, pink beach shells, and crystal-clear waters teeming with marine life from the nearby marine reserve. If the tide permits, we’ll make our way to Hot Water Beach, where you can indulge in the luxury of creating your very own all-natural hot pools in the sand. Who says backpackers can’t enjoy a touch of indulgence?

On our way, we’ll make a stop at a supermarket to stock up on supplies. Tonight, you have the choice of crafting your own meal or joining in a group beach BBQ, allowing you to savor the flavors and camaraderie in this idyllic setting.

(Breakfast included)

Hahei to Rotoura

Today kicks off with an early start as we embark on a coastal trek to Cathedral Cove, ensuring ample time to witness a breathtaking sunrise. The beauty of the sunrise makes waking up early well worth it. Enjoy a delightful breakfast picnic by the water, savoring the soothing sound of waves and the warmth of the sun on your skin.

Next, we set off towards the cultural and geothermal town of Rotorua. But before that, we have an exciting adventure in store. Explore the native forest of the Karangahake Gorge, immersing yourself in the remnants of old gold mining relics. Then, prepare to meet a Hobbit as we venture to Hobbiton, the enchanting movie set nestled in the heart of Middle Earth. Don’t forget to raise a glass at the Green Dragon, the original shire pub from the films.

In the late afternoon, we’ll arrive in Rotorua, allowing for a potential stroll through the magnificent California redwoods in Whakarewarewa Forest. Rotorua is renowned as the geothermal hot spot of the North Island, so brace yourself for a unique olfactory experience!

(Breakfast included)

Rotorua to Lake Aniwhenua

Before bidding farewell to Rotorua, we have a fascinating opportunity to witness the geothermal wonders of Kuirau Park. Here, you’ll witness the thin crust of the Earth, surrounded by steaming volcanic lakes and boiling mud ponds, with native wildlife thriving in this unique environment.

Following that, prepare for an extraordinary journey into authentic New Zealand Maori culture. Today, we venture off the beaten track to the picturesque shores of Lake Aniwhenua, where a local Maori family personally invites you to Kohutapu Lodge. Immerse yourself in a range of captivating experiences, including observing sacred Maori rock carvings, engaging in the traditional hongi greeting, participating in stick games, and learning the art of swinging the poi. The highlight awaits as you savor the most incredible meal—a traditional ground-cooked ‘hangi.’

Our gracious hosts passionately share their Maori tribal heritage, taking you on an educational and enlightening journey through their personal history and Iwi (tribe). Embrace the opportunity to truly understand Maori culture beyond the familiar Haka, and you’ll be rewarded with newfound knowledge and a memorable shared meal. Forge new friendships and create lasting memories before retiring for a restful night’s sleep in a cozy lakeside cabin.

(Breakfast and dinner included)

Lake Aniwhenua to Taupo

Today brings a change of pace as we begin with a delightful buffet breakfast and bid farewell to our wonderful hosts. Our first stop will invigorate your senses and provide a thrilling experience. Get ready for Kerosene Creek, a thermally heated river featuring a natural swimming pool. We highly recommend wearing swimwear (known as “togs” in Kiwi slang) because we’re going for a swim!

Next, we set our sights on Lake Taupo, the largest lake in Australasia and an adventure enthusiast’s paradise. This expansive lake is actually a volcanic caldera, and its eruption was once speculated to have contributed to the extinction of dinosaurs due to the immense ash cloud it produced. Along the way to Taupo, we’ll make a stop at Huka Falls, an awe-inspiring display of powerful waterfalls that flow into the lake. You’ll hear their thunderous roar before you see them. Use the afternoon to explore the charming township, visit shops and bars, or, for an incredible experience, pre-book a skydive to admire the breathtaking views of the lake and snow-covered mountains to the south.

For dinner, you have the option to venture into town or join us for a supermarket stop where you can gather supplies to cook your own meal or create a group feast.

(Breakfast included)

Optional Pre-Booked Activity: Skydive

Taupo to National Park

Today, our U. Promise of extraordinary off-the-beaten-track experiences continues. Brace yourself for a thrilling adventure as we embark on a canoeing journey along the majestic Whanganui River. Nestled within the picturesque Whanganui National Park, this scenic river will take us through cascading waterfalls, breathtaking sheer gorges, lush native forests, and even traverse the renowned farmland of New Zealand. Immerse yourself in the rich history of the Whanganui River, which holds significant cultural and historical importance for both Maori and European heritage. A notable landmark along the way is the iconic ‘Bridge to Nowhere.’ Enjoy a delightful picnic lunch while surrounded by the beauty of the river. Tonight, we’ll experience the comfort of awesome alpine chalets for our overnight stay.

(Breakfast and lunch included)

Get ready for an exhilarating day as you seize the opportunity to conquer one of the world’s top 10 one-day hikes—the legendary Tongariro Alpine Crossing. This epic 19km alpine trek will take you through diverse landscapes, from bush and scrub to awe-inspiring mountain summits. Prepare to traverse open volcanic terrains and witness the mesmerizing turquoise crater lakes, offering enough visual splendor to fill your Instagram feed for months. Along the way, you’ll encounter remarkable highlights such as Taranaki Falls, the Volcanic Centre, and iconic sights like Mount Ngarahoe (known as Mount Doom from LOTR) and Tawhai Falls (also known as Gollum’s pool).

Please note that the Tongariro Crossing is situated in high-altitude terrain, and although rare, adverse weather conditions may occasionally prevent us from completing the hike. In such cases, we have thoughtfully prepared a series of alternative shorter walks in the area, ensuring a wonderful and equally captivating experience. After your epic day hike, we return to our alpine chalets, where you can unwind in the hot tub, soothing your muscles while reveling in the stunning mountain views at sunset.

(Breakfast included)

Today, we are heading to Wellington, known as the ‘coolest little capital in the world’. Wellington has been New Zealand’s capital since 1865 and offers a mix of a beautiful harbour, a hip and modern scene. Along the way, we will make a stop in Taihape to participate in the unique activity of throwing a gumboot. In Wellington, you will have ample time to explore the downtown district with its trendy restaurants and bars on Cuba Street and Courtenay Place. You can also visit Te Papa National Museum to learn about New Zealand’s heritage, enjoy a craft beer at one of the many breweries, take in panoramic views from the top of Mt Victoria, or take a leisurely stroll along the waterfront and Oriental Parade. And for coffee lovers, Wellington’s coffee culture and cafe scene are considered some of the best in New Zealand.

(Breakfast included)

This morning, you will say goodbye to the North Island and take an early ferry ride across Cook Strait to Picton in the South Island. If the weather is good, you should enjoy the views from the ferry’s observation deck. Marlborough Sounds includes Queen Charlotte Sounds, Kenepuru Sounds, Pelorus Sounds, and Mahau Sounds. The fiords are covered in natural forest and reach down to a dark green sea. After reaching the “mainland,” we will travel through the picturesque Marlborough region known for its wines and hops. Our destination is Marahau, right on the edge of Abel Tasman National Park. You will immediately feel the slower pace of the South Island and can relax in an outdoor bath under the starry sky. We will stop at a supermarket for supplies, and you can choose to cook for yourself or join in a group meal and wine tasting. Breakfast is included.

Beyond a mere glimpse of New Zealand’s magnificence

Celebrating the legacy of renowned Dutch explorer Able Tasman, this compact yet extraordinary national park serves as the ultimate gateway to the wonders of the South Island. Today promises to be an unforgettable experience. Departing from the hostel, you will embark on a thrilling 12-kilometer water taxi journey to Anchorage Bay. Prepare to be enchanted as you embark on a leisurely 4-hour hike, traversing pristine golden sand beaches and traversing the shimmering azure waters. Take delight in a picturesque beachside picnic before venturing to Cleopatra’s Pools, a series of emerald freshwater pools adorned with moss, featuring a natural water slide. In the afternoon, seize the opportunity for exhilarating sea kayaking within the National Park or opt to return to the hostel and unwind on the beach.

(Complimentary breakfast included)

Embrace the Untamed Beauty of the West Coast

Prepare for an exhilarating journey as we embark on a day of exploration along the breathtaking and rugged “wild” West Coast. Brace yourself for a unique experience through winding canyons, tranquil rainforests, and untamed beaches that grace this stunning coastline. Our adventure begins by traversing Buller Gorge, a road trip that Lonely Planet rightfully hails as one of the world’s finest, showcasing New Zealand’s longest swing bridge spanning the Buller River—an impressive 110 meters in length!

With a stroke of luck, we may catch a glimpse of fur seals at the Cape Foulwind colony. During the appropriate season, keep an eye out for orcas, dolphins, whales, and the delightful blue penguins. Following the picturesque coastal route, we’ll encounter the peculiar limestone formations and enchanting blowholes resembling stacked pancakes at Punakaiki, also known as Pancake Rocks. Amidst our exploration, we may even encounter the elusive and unique “West Coaster” breed—a group of locals who embrace a slower pace of life, prioritizing moments over cellphones, lattes, and the allure of social media. Their wisdom lies in enjoying a pint and dealing with life’s challenges tomorrow.

For the next two nights, we’ll find respite in the rainforest village of Franz Josef, aptly named after the magnificent glacier that graces its outskirts. This charming locale will serve as our base, where we’ll gather for a delightful group meal at the remarkable Monsoon Bar.

(Inclusive of breakfast and dinner)

A Glacial Adventure Like No Other

Prepare for a remarkable encounter unlike anything you’ll find elsewhere in the Southern Hemisphere. Today, we have the extraordinary opportunity to witness a “breathing” glacier up close. The Franz Josef Glacier, an esteemed West Coast landmark, was named in honor of the Austrian Emperor Franz Josef I by Julius von Haast. Immerse yourself in the splendor of Westland Tai Poutini National Park as you embark on a hike through dense rainforests, tracing the path of alpine streams until you reach the snow-capped expanse of the glacier. What sets the Franz Josef Glacier apart is its unique characteristic of having the lowest elevation of any glacier worldwide, gracefully flowing into a temperate rainforest—a fascinating convergence of two distinct and biologically diverse environments.

Regrettably, the glacier’s awe-inspiring presence also serves as a stark reminder of our changing world. Its retreat becomes palpable as you witness the clear evidence of recession—over 3 kilometers lost in the past 80 years, with a significant portion occurring within the last two decades, largely attributed to the impact of global warming. To add a touch of relaxation and indulgence to your day, be sure to unwind in the Waiho Hot Tubs upon your return from exploration!

For those seeking an even closer encounter with the glacier, we offer the option to pre-book a heli-hike experience. This exhilarating adventure will take you directly onto the glacier itself, allowing you to explore its captivating ice caves and ravines.

(Inclusive of breakfast)

Optional activities for pre-booking: Heli-hike

Traversing Majestic Alps, Lakes, and Passes

Prepare for another captivating journey through the renowned and picturesque landscapes that have made New Zealand a global sensation. Today, we set off on a route that takes us back across the magnificent Southern Alps towards Queenstown, immersing ourselves in the breathtaking beauty that unfolds along the way. Our first stop is Lake Matheson, renowned for its serene and reflective waters, which create a mirror-like surface, amplifying the grandeur of the surrounding scenery. Prepare to be awe-struck as nature’s artistry doubles the impact of the stunning vistas!

Our path leads us on an alpine crossing via Haast Pass, guiding us along the enchanting shores of Lake Hawea as we venture towards the captivating Lake Wanaka. From there, we make our way to the self-proclaimed adventure capital of the world—Queenstown. This vibrant destination is celebrated for its remarkable scenery, vibrant nightlife, enticing shopping and dining options, and, of course, its plethora of exhilarating adrenaline sports. None exemplify this spirit more than bungy jumping. As we approach Queenstown, we make a stop at the iconic Karawau Bridge, the very site where the world’s first commercial bungy jump took place years ago. Feel free to take the leap (we dare you!) or simply enjoy the spectacle as others take the plunge. Continuing our journey, keep an eye out for the Remarkables mountain range on your left—a unique feature as one of the only two ranges in the world that run true north to south.

Tonight, we invite you to relish in a delightful group meal and then put on your dancing shoes, as Queenstown boasts a staggering array of over 100 clubs and bars to choose from—a testament to its vibrant nightlife.

(Inclusive of breakfast)

Get Ready for an Epic Adventure!

For those of us who may have indulged a bit too much in Queenstown’s electrifying nightlife, waking up today might be a challenge. However, fear not, as the breathtaking mountain scenery and the vast array of activities available will quickly wash away any remnants of a hangover. Prepare for an adventure-packed day with an extensive list of thrilling options to choose from. Whether you’re up for bungy jumping, jet boating, canyon swinging, canyon swimming, hiking, mountain biking, skiing, or even ice skating, the level of excitement is entirely up to you!

While there are countless options, we highly recommend joining the majority of the group on the Twilight wine and craft beer tour. It provides an incredible opportunity to explore Arrowtown and the Gibbston Valley of the Vines, all while enjoying a delightful evening warm-up before another unforgettable night in Queenstown. Kindly note that pre-booking is required for both the Twilight tour and adventure activities to secure availability.

(Inclusive of breakfast)

Optional activities for pre-booking: Glenorchy day trip, Twilight wine and craft beer tour, jet boating, other activities to be decided.

Embark on a Breathtaking Milford Sound Adventure

Milford Sound consistently captures the hearts of international travel magazines, earning the coveted title of the most beautiful place on Earth. Today, we’ll depart from Queenstown at sunrise, ensuring an early arrival in Fiordland National Park to savor the tranquility before the crowds arrive. As we journey, prepare to be mesmerized by the awe-inspiring scenery, with cascading waterfalls tumbling down massive granite slabs, framing the winding mountain road. Rudyard Kipling aptly described Milford Sound as the “eighth wonder of the world.”

Milford Sound is an expansive fjord-cut valley, stretching 22 kilometers in length and up to 2 kilometers wide at its mouth. Our adventure continues as we board a chartered boat, specially arranged for our group, to venture deep into the fjords. Prepare to be enchanted by the sight of roaring waterfalls, playful seals, delightful penguins, and, if we’re fortunate, frolicking dolphins. Onboard, a knowledgeable nature guide will provide engaging and informative commentary, enriching our journey. With a smaller boat, we’ll have ample opportunities to explore beyond the main route, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the serenity and beauty of this remote location, away from the crowds.

Milford Sound’s vertical rock walls are breathtaking regardless of the weather. However, when it rains, the landscape transforms into a spectacle of nature’s power. The waterfalls multiply as the mountain peaks become drenched, adding to the dramatic allure of this secluded paradise. After this awe-inspiring experience, we’ll return to Queenstown, ensuring you have enough time to rejuvenate or, if you’re still full of energy, partake in the vibrant nightlife that awaits.

(Inclusive of breakfast)

Embrace More Queenstown Adventures

Today presents another opportunity to embark on the adventure activities you may have missed out on before. Have you taken the plunge off the bridges, explored the exhilarating downhill tracks on a mountain bike from the Queenstown gondola, or experienced the heart-pounding thrill of a jet boat ride? If you’re seeking a unique and different experience, we highly recommend trying stand-up paddleboarding on a mountain alpine lake—a personal favorite among our team.

For those seeking a more tranquil and serene adventure, consider a leisurely lake boat cruise aboard the Earnslaw or embark on a day trip to Glenorchy, where you can immerse yourself in the awe-inspiring landscapes made famous by the Lord of the Rings films.

Please keep in mind that many of the recommended activities require pre-booking to ensure availability and secure prices.

Embrace an Insta-Worthy Adventure

We hope you managed to get enough rest last night as we kickstart our day bright and early, beginning our journey back north. Our first stop is Wanaka, where you’ll discover a town brimming with Instagram-worthy icons like no other. Our route takes us across the stunning Crown Range, making a quick stop for a photo opportunity at the iconic Cardrona Pub. But the highlight awaits at the top of Roys Peak, a reward for conquering a significant uphill hike. Prepare to capture one of New Zealand’s most famous photographs, boasting uninterrupted 360-degree views of Lake Wanaka, the town itself, the majestic Mt Aspiring, and the captivating Aspiring National Park.

Once we descend from the peak, you’ll have some time to explore Wanaka’s enchanting charm. Discover the numerous arts and crafts stores, take a leisurely stroll along the lake to the mouth of the Clutha River, and make sure to capture the iconic Wanaka Tree—an Instagram must-do. Alternatively, you can rent a bike and cover more ground as you soak in the breathtaking beauty of the lake.

After a delightful lunch, we continue our journey, traversing the mesmerizing Lindis Pass and immersing ourselves in the alpine desert landscape of the Mackenzie Basin, en route to Tekapo. Brace yourself for high alpine passes, deep valleys embraced by towering mountain ranges, and the mesmerizing turquoise lakes, fed by the colossal Southern Alps. As we pass by Tekapo, Ohau, and Pukaki—each exhibiting a unique shade of turquoise—we’re greeted by the grandeur of the Southern Alps, with the magnificent Mt Cook/Aoraki (meaning Cloud Piercer in Maori) towering above all.

Late afternoon, we arrive in the peaceful village of Tekapo—a perfect haven to recharge after the excitement of Queenstown. Take a leisurely lakeside walk to the renowned Church of the Good Shepherd, a picturesque stone church nestled on the lake’s edge, adorned with a bronze statue celebrating the New Zealand Collie sheepdog. Furthermore, Tekapo offers an unparalleled opportunity to witness the mesmerizing Southern Hemisphere night sky—the Milky Way adorned with planets, stars, galaxies, and solar systems. In fact, the night sky around Tekapo is a designated World Heritage Site, protected by law to preserve its pristine darkness. Tonight, we’ll have the chance to participate in virtual stargazing, an experience like no other.

(Inclusive of breakfast)

Rediscover the Vibrant City of Christchurch

As we make our way back north, we arrive in Christchurch, the largest city in the South Island. It feels like an eternity since we last experienced the bustling atmosphere of Wellington. Christchurch is a city of striking colors, where the juxtaposition of old and new creates a captivating blend. In 2011, a devastating earthquake shook the city, leveling a significant portion of its landscape. However, over the past decade, an incredible reconstruction effort has transformed Christchurch into a showcase of old-world charm harmoniously intertwined with innovative architecture, signifying a city that embraces both its past and future.

This afternoon, you’ll have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the wonders of Christchurch. Explore the reStart container center, a vibrant hub that emerged in the aftermath of the 2011 earthquake, showcasing a unique and creative retail space. Discover the remarkable cardboard cathedral, a testament to the city’s resilience and ingenuity. Take a stroll through the scenic Botanical Gardens, where nature’s beauty thrives amidst the urban landscape. Uncover hidden eateries, indulge in craft beer and gin bars, and immerse yourself in the city’s lively street art scene. Pay homage to the earthquake’s impact at the poignant earthquake memorial on Hereford Street, featuring 185 White Chairs—a powerful symbol of remembrance.

(Inclusive of breakfast)

Journeying along the Scenic East Coast

We rise early today, bidding farewell to Christchurch as we venture northward along the rugged coastline towards the charming town of Kaikoura. This area has also faced the impact of earthquakes, with significant landslides and road subsidence isolating the town from the rest of the country as recently as 2016.

Rooted in its historical whaling past, Kaikoura has transformed into a hub for marine life conservation along the coast, particularly renowned for its great sperm whale breeding grounds. Embark on a captivating water excursion and witness the splendor of dusky dolphins, orcas, humpback whales, and an array of other fascinating sea creatures up close. Alternatively, explore the scenic peninsula trail, where you can pass by fur seal colonies and marvel at the majestic whales against the backdrop of the bay and the snow-capped Alps.

Tonight, it’s all about indulging in seafood delights. New Zealand, with its three main islands and numerous smaller ones, boasts an abundance of fresh and delectable seafood. Kaikoura, meaning “crayfish food” in Māori (kai – food/meal, kōura – crayfish), offers an authentic and local experience to satisfy your seafood cravings. For a taste of true “Kiwiana,” be sure to savor the iconic fish ‘n’ chips—a beloved New Zealand culinary tradition.

(Inclusive of breakfast)

Optional activities for pre-booking: Whale watching

Returning to the Capital City

Today’s journey takes us leisurely along the coastal road, offering glimpses of seals basking in the bays and the possibility of spotting dolphins frolicking in the waters. As we meander through the picturesque rolling vineyards in the northern part of the South Island, we eventually arrive in Picton, where we reunite with the ferry for our return trip across the Cook Strait to Wellington. Take a moment to appreciate the ever-changing view from the deck as we depart Picton—a stark contrast to the sight that greeted us upon our arrival over a week ago. We encourage you to savor the beauty of this scenic cruise, keep your cameras at the ready, and simply enjoy the journey.

We’ll spend the night in Wellington, providing you with ample opportunities to revisit those shops, cafes, or bars you may have missed during our initial visit. If you didn’t have a chance to experience the vibrant nightlife around Cuba Street on your way down the country, we highly recommend making the most of it tonight—a perfect way to cap off our adventure.
